And here with you - Quick Tips Friday!
This time, we’re talking about how to access the files you’ve shared in a Microsoft Teams channel in SharePoint.
Every file you upload to a channel isn’t just stored in Teams. It’s automatically saved in SharePoint and that’s where you can edit the file itself and manage its metadata.
1 - How to Access Team Files in SharePoint
You can get to your files in just a few clicks:
Open the channel where the file was shared in Microsoft Teams
Select the Files tab at the top
Click “Open in SharePoint” (top-right corner)
This will take you to the connected SharePoint document library.

2 - What You Can Do in SharePoint
Once there, you can:
Browse all files shared in the channel
Access version history for each document
Use filters and custom views
Add metadata, trigger workflows, or apply retention policies
Manage permissions in line with your organization’s settings
3 - Tip: What’s Actually Stored in SharePoint?
When you upload a file to a Teams channel:
It’s saved in the SharePoint site connected to that Team
Each standard channel gets its own folder in the site’s document library
File permissions are inherited from the Team - no extra setup needed
SharePoint tracks versions, stores metadata, and integrates with compliance tools
So if you’ve ever wondered where those files “go” now you know: it’s SharePoint all along.
